On 4 May, Premier Mike Baird officially launched Anglicare’s Winter Appeal at the Westin Hotel. This winter, Anglicare aims to raise $1.5 million to fund its Emergency Relief centres as well as investing in specialised case managers to meet a growing demand.

Archbishop Glenn Davies hosted the fundraising dinner for over 440 guests. Our supporters were most generous on the night, raising $466,000. Anglicare Sydney Patron, the Hon John Howard OM, AC and Mrs Janette Howard, were among our special guests.

A true highlight of the evening was hearing Robert, one of our clients, bravely share his own story. Robert was a working father of three when his wife became addicted to ice and alcohol. This led to the breakdown of their marriage. Overwhelmed by debt, Robert and his children became homeless. Robert and his three young children were in crisis, all sharing one room in a friend’s apartment, when Robert’s local MP directed him to Anglicare.

A case manager with the Liverpool/Sadleir Sustainable Living team, immediately provided Robert with food vouchers, found the family suitable accommodation and helped him manage his finances. It was inspiring to hear firsthand how Robert overcame the problems that had initially defeated him. The right assistance at the right time meant Robert could once again take charge of his family’s circumstances and provide for his children.

Robert says, “The family case workers that provide support on a regular basis helped me feel I wasn’t alone in difficult times – that’s priceless in itself.”

“Our future is far brighter these days, we’re all resettled and we have been in our own home for just under a year now. The children are all well-adjusted, in a routine and doing well at school.”

Anglicare’s Community Services help over 13,000 people every year. Approximately 2,500 households who come to us for emergency assistance live on less than $400 a week, many spending more than half their income on rent.
