Time is such a valuable thing – we measure it, we try to preserve it and when we have the choice we spend it on the things we value most in the world. Yet it is the one thing we cannot hold on to. It passes more quickly than we care to think.
And because time slips so quickly through our fingers, it is important that we are reminded about those things we tend to procrastinate over because they don’t appear to be urgent. Reviewing your Will is one of those crucial, yet seemingly non-urgent things in life.
Yet we should develop a routine for reviewing our Wills at least every five years, and particularly when there are important changes in our lives. These changes could be moving house, the wedding of one of your children, the birth of a child or grandchild or simply changing jobs.
It is important to consider what are the things that need updating in you Will. One of the simplest things that can be overlooked, for instance, is whether you need to reconsider who should be your executor and how easy it may be for him or her to manage your affairs when the time comes.
In any case, it is important to seek the help of a solicitor or trust company who can provide proper legal advice on the necessary changes.
